Tips for Gluten Free Red Velvet Donuts
- When preparing your donut pan for this gluten free donut recipe you want to make sure you heavily grease your donut cavities. The donut crumb is very tender and they will stick to the pan and break if you don’t.
- Make sure not to over fill your donut pan with the batter. This can be problematic when it comes to the donuts releasing from the pan.
- Lastly, make sure to refrigerate the donuts for at least an hour before you dip them into the glaze. This helps them to set and keeps them from breaking off into the glaze. You can also freeze them for 20 minutes if you don’t want to wait an hour.
Ingredients To Make Red Velvet Donuts
- 1 1/4 cup super fine almond flour
- 1/2 cup coconut flour
- 1/4 cup potato starch
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 3/4 cup honey
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup unsweetened cashew milk ( I use silk brand )
- 3 tsp. red food coloring. ( You can sub for 3 tbsp. beet powder but FYI – it will alter the taste. )
Cream Cheese Glaze
- 1 – 8 oz. cream cheese ( softened ) or for dairy free I like wayfare brand and tofutti brand cream cheese.
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp. Earth Balance Butter ( softened )
- 1 1/2 cups Wholesome Brand Powdered Sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cashew milk ( silk brand )
How To Make Red Velvet Donuts
To make these gluten free donuts you will first make sure you have pre-heated your oven to 350 degrees. Next you will want to set out your donut pan and grease it generously. In a large bowl you will combine your grain free flours, baking soda, and cocoa powder ( and beet powder if your not using red food coloring ). I mix those really good together – breaking up all the little flour clumps. Now you will make a well in the center of your flour mix and add your wet ingredients. Mix really well with a whisk … no need to blend.
Once you have your gluten free donut batter completely mixed, you will use a large cookie scoop and scoop the batter into the greased donut cavities. Bake the donuts for 15 minutes. Oven temperatures can vary so make sure to keep an eye on them.
Now that they are done baking you will need to let them cool for 15 minutes then place in the fridge for an hour to set. You can also freeze them for 20 minutes if you don’t want to wait an hour. Once they are done cooling and are set , you can glaze them.
